Vietnam Taekwondo at Asiad 2026: A Medal Bet Resting on Two Female Fighters

I sat alone in my Tokyo office, rewinding the tape of the women's 67kg semifinal at the Hangzhou Asiad, the Games held in 2026 because of the pandemic. Bạc Thị Khiêm lost that match and took bronze. She stepped off the mat, bowed to her opponent, walked straight out. No arm-waving. No tears.

In Kyorugi, a foreign coach's value also sits somewhere few notice: preparing for instant-replay challenge situations. The electronic system reduces judging disputes but does not eliminate them. The team better prepared for those moments takes points at the margins. That edge does not show in the record book; it only shows on the scoreboard.

At the same time, a rules change is narrowing the field: women's weight classes are being merged so the Olympics carries only four. For a country with limited resources, that is good news for concentration but bad news for the number of opportunities. Fewer categories means fewer tickets.

Where I could be wrong

I have to give this section its due, because data explains the past while emotion predicts the future.

The counter-argument is strong. Concentrating resources into two women's categories may be the right call, not the wrong one. In a state sports system with a finite budget, spreading thin across six categories is the surest way to win nowhere. Vietnamese taekwondo may simply be relearning a lesson other sports learned long ago.
