U23 South Korea vs U23 Vietnam in the Asiad 20 quarter-final: nine Europe-based players and a height gap in Nagoya

At 17:30 on 25 September 2026, the Paloma Mizuho Stadium in Nagoya opens for the Asiad 20 men's football quarter-final between U23 Vietnam and U23 South Korea. Eight months earlier the two sides met in the third-place match of the 2026 AFC U23 Asian Cup: 2-2 after 120 minutes, then U23 Vietnam won on penalties. That memory is intact, but South Korea's squad this time is a different animal.

It is easy to understand why Vietnamese confidence has risen since January. What deserves more attention sits on the other bench: a Korean side calling up nine players who play their club football in Europe is a team loading its chips on this tournament far beyond what the competition demands. Guangzhou taught me: money cannot buy a match, but it can buy the man standing next to you.

Two goals set at two different levels

U23 South Korea arrive at Asiad 20 with a squad that differs sharply from the one they fielded in January. Nine Europe-based players have been called up, most of them at clubs in the United Kingdom, including England, Scotland and Wales. The group shares speed, a strong physical base and a power-oriented style — football forged in leagues where duels happen constantly.

Three of them are overage: midfielder Lee Gi Hyuk, 26, of Gangwon FC; Yang Hyun Jun, 24, of Celtic; and Eom Ji Sung, 24, of Swansea City. Those three bring professional experience most U23 Vietnam players have never accumulated.

The goals also sit on different floors. U23 Vietnam, alongside U23 Japan and U23 Uzbekistan, have brought a large group of 21-year-olds to Asiad 20 with an eye on the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. U23 South Korea came to win gold. They are the most title-hungry team in the history of Asiad men's football and have won the last three editions, in 2026, 2026 and 2026.

The Korean press, meanwhile, is cautious. The Daum outlet noted that although coach Kim Sang Sik is not directly in charge of U23 Vietnam, the team still runs on his tactical framework: solid defending, pragmatism, intense pressing and denying opponents any room to build. The same outlet judged Kim Sang Sik's absence from the bench as a catalyst pushing Vietnamese players to compete harder.

The real choke point is in the air

South Korea's physical profile creates an obvious gap. In goal, Kim Joon Hong stands 1.90m. The back line has Park Seong Hoon at 1.83m, Kim Jo Soo at 1.92m and Shin Min Ha at 1.86m. In midfield, Lee Gi Hyuk and Park Seung Soo both measure 1.84m. Up front, Lee Young Jun is 1.93m and Kim Myung Jun 1.82m.

Vietnam's starting eleven since the tournament began has usually featured only two players above 1.80m: goalkeeper Cao Van Binh at 1.84m and centre-back Pham Ly Duc at 1.82m. The rest are noticeably shorter, and the gap between Lee Young Jun and Vietnam's shortest centre-back exceeds ten centimetres in aerial duels.

From my experience watching matches across several Asiad editions, East Asian sides tend to exploit height in two directions. Set pieces — corners, wide free kicks, deep throw-ins in the opponent's half — are the first. The second is the deliberate long ball to contest second balls, turning the game into a chain of collisions in midfield.

For U23 Vietnam, defending the air is not simply about jumping. It is about cutting the ball off before it arrives, holding the line's spacing, and forcing the goalkeeper to be decisive coming off his line. Pham Ly Duc can mark the tallest opponent, but if the midfield lets crosses come in freely from the flanks, the odds of losing inside the box compound with every delivery.

The playing style of the group arriving from England, Scotland and Wales poses another problem. They play at high tempo, with few touches, quick transitions and no fear of vertical duels. U23 Vietnam will struggle to hold the ball for long against that kind of opponent, so the sensible plan is to concede territory and counter through short transitions, aimed at the space behind the full-backs whenever they push up.

Height does not score goals on its own

Nine players flying in from Europe do not automatically make a better team. They join late, train together for a handful of days, and bring different time zones, different tempos and even different names for the same tactical principles. My experience following Olympic and Asiad teams is that late-arriving groups usually need a full half to synchronise, and in that half they convert physical advantage into disconnected play.

Height only matters when the ball arrives at the right point. A deep defensive block still has ways to neutralise it: hold the spacing, block the receiving player's run, force crosses from further out, and let the goalkeeper work inside the six-yard box. South Korea have won many games through physicality, but they have also stalled against blocks that stand in the right places.

The most questionable part of U23 South Korea at Asiad 20 is structure, not size. Three overage players inside a largely U23 group change the hierarchy in the dressing room and the way the ball is distributed. In the transfer market, reputation is the easiest currency to launder. A name playing in Europe can push a coaching staff to prioritise him while a domestic player in better form sits out. If U23 South Korea leave Nagoya early, the model of mass-calling Europe-based players will be questioned back home.

People need data to make predictions. I only need to look at the crowd and walk the other way. The crowd here is staring at the height chart and at three consecutive Asiad titles. The whole world laughed when I picked Croatia. In the end, I was the one laughing. In this match, I am not laughing at U23 Vietnam, but I am not trembling before U23 South Korea either.

A forecast that can be checked

The first half will most likely end without a goal, or if there is one it will come from a set piece. The decisive goal will land somewhere from the 70th minute onwards, when the physical gap between a team playing at a European rhythm and a team playing at a Southeast Asian rhythm becomes visible.
